About the Dean
Dr. April Pike, Dean
Dr. April Pike was appointed Dean of ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ University’s Faculty of Nursing, effective Oct. 4, 2024.
A longtime faculty member, Dr. Pike has taught in the Faculty’s undergraduate and graduate programs since 2005. She is a proud ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ graduate three times over, with a Bachelor of Nursing, a Master of Nursing and a PhD in Community Health from the Faculty of Medicine.
Before joining the Faculty, Dr. Pike practised as a registered nurse in a number of areas, including critical care, and has nursing experience at the provincial, national and international levels.

An experienced educator and community leader, Dr. Pike has been recognized for her teaching, advocacy and service:
- President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching (2020)
ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ University - Award of Excellence in Nursing Education (2018)
Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (now the NL College of Nurses) - Caring Hearts Circle (2018)
Heart and Stroke Foundation, for her advocacy and education about cardiovascular health - President’s Award for Exceptional Community Service (2016)
ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ University
She is a member of the Canadian Women’s Heart Health Alliance and the Canadian Nursing Genomics Steering Committee, and is well known for her public engagement and volunteer work in the community.
Expertise and research
Dr. Pike’s areas of expertise include:
- Genetics and the concept of risk
- Cardiovascular health
- Organ procurement
- Qualitative research methods
She has published in a number of journals on topics such as genetics, women’s heart health and hearing loss.
