SUBJECT: Immigration and Sustainable Development Symposium to take place at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ University

The Immigration and Sustainable Development Symposium will be held on Friday, Nov. 30, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in R. Gushue Hall on ÐÓ°É´«Ã½'s St. John's campus.
The symposium will feature two panels on rural development and skills training with presenters from academia, government and industry. This diverse group of experts will share their insights into current challenges in their fields, as well as innovative solutions that are being implemented across Newfoundland and Labrador and elsewhere.
Bernard Davis, minister, Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, and Dr. Max Liboiron, associate vice-president (Indigenous research), ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ University, will deliver opening remarks.
Dr. Gregory Cameron, associate professor, Dalhousie University; Gillian Skinner, assistant deputy minister, regional economic development, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador; Dr. Ivan Emke, Honorary Research Professor, ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ University; and John Norman, mayor, Bonavista, and CEO, Bonavista Living, will participate in a rural development panel.
George Lee, internship co-ordinator, Shorefast Foundation; Delia Warren, director, Iron and Earth East; Sarah Thompson, project manager, Association for New Canadians; and Dr. Ather Akbari, economist, Atlantic Research Group on Economics of Immigration, Aging and Diversity, will participate in a skills training panel.
The event is co-hosted by Dr. Tony Fang, Stephen Jarislowsky Chair of Cultural and Economic Transformation, and professor, Department of Economics, ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ University, and the Atlantic Research Group on Economics of Immigration, Aging and Diversity.
