SUBJECT: Teaching and learning collaborative space opens at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ University

DATE: September 11, 2014

Note to editors:

Members of the media are invited to attend the grand opening event of the Teaching and Learning Commons in the Faculty of Education on ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ University’s St. John’s campus.

The Faculty of Education has taken an outdated computer lab and transformed it into a creative teaching and learning space for students. The primary purpose of the new Teaching and Learning Commons (TLC) is to facilitate and encourage collaborative learning using 21st-century technology, which parallels the kinds of learning environments teacher graduates are expected to create when they begin practising as professional teachers and instructors.

The room contains state-of-the-art iMac stations, SMART boards, projectors, screens and computer applications where pre-service teachers can complete course work and develop lesson plans for their future students. The TLC features unique furniture, such as cylindrical chairs that promote active sitting, mini-classroom setups, multi-level chairs and tables and booth seating. It is an open space that can accommodate 11 working groups, but also has sub-sections and dividers to separate groups and to help absorb noise.

The grand opening of the Teaching and Learning Commons will take place on Monday, Sept. 15, at 10:30 a.m. in room ED-5006 of the G.A. Hickman (Education) building. Darin King, minister, Department of Education, and Dr. Gary Kachanoski, president and vice-chancellor, ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ University, will speak at the event. Light refreshments will be provided and limited paid parking is available in Parking Garage 27A.
