SUBJECT: PSA: Renowned linguist to give lecture on language death on ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Universitys St. Johns campus

Half the languages of the world will die out within the next century. Renowned linguist Dr. David Crystal who will receive an honorary degree at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½s fall 2011 convocation ceremonies reviews the way languages are dying, asks why, and then asks what can be done. He presents the arguments around why people should be concerned, drawing a parallel with other ecological domains.
This talk will be of particular interest to those interested in Newfoundland English and Aboriginal languages.
The lecture is open to all and begins at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, in room SN-2098 of the Science building.
