Research Statement
My proposed MA thesis focuses on the Norse site at L’Anse aux Meadows. I will be studying the excavations conducted there in 1973, 1974, and 1975, focusing on the writings of Swedish archaeologist Bengt Schonbäck. I aim to learn Schonbäck’s perspectives of the site and contrast them with the traditional narrative surrounding it. I seek to understand what different insights and explanations he may have had that could change the way we think about L’Anse aux Meadows and the Norse exploration of the Americas.
