Research Interests

My research interests in historical archaeology focus on colonialism and its enduring legacies, cultural interactions, colonial economies and identities. To examine the plurality of French colonial experience, I have conducted research projects in the French colonies of the Americas – in Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, Nouvelle-France, French Guiana and the French Antilles.

Since 2018, I have a new ongoing project funded by a SSRCH-Insight Grant. Entitled On the “Cod Road”: Saint-Pierre et Miquelon and the Atlantic Network of the 17th-19th century, this project is documenting the impact of peripheral French territories and their maritime networks on the colonial Atlantic world. My research opens a new territory to the field of historical archaeology (Saint-Pierre et Miquelon) and adds new dimensions to the understanding of the Atlantic colonial world. With my students, I highlight the importance of “marginal” colonies (Saint-Pierre et Miquelon and French Guiana) during the European expansion of the 17th and 18th centuries.
